Significance
Women all over the world are subjected to violence in one form or another. According to data from the World Health Organization, one in three women faces physical or sexual violence by their partner or sexual violence from a non-partner in their lifetime. As per a UN report, every day 137 women are killed by a member of their family and less than 40% of women experiencing violence seek help. It is therefore very important to end this endless violence against women which can only be done by acting together. With this in mind, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed every year on 25 November. In addition to this, the day also marks the beginning of the “16 days of activism” that concludes with the observation of Human Rights Day on December 10.
History
The first step toward ending violence against women was taken with the adoption of the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by the UN General Assembly in 1979. Many women’s rights activists have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This was done in response to the assassination of the Mirabal sisters on the same day in 1960 who fought against the Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo for their rights.
On 20 December 1993, the General Assembly adopted resolution 48/104 comprising Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, and finally, on 7 February 2000, it adopted resolution 54/134, assigning 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
