World Cotton Day Significance

Cotton plays an important role in maintaining and sustaining the economies of multiple countries around the world. Cotton finds applications in different industries, especially in the textile and clothing industries. The economies of many poor countries depend on the export of cotton and it supports many households by offering employment. To make people aware of the crucial role of cotton and increase its visibility in the economic sector, World Cotton Day is celebrated every year on October 7. The day also provides an opportunity to renew the commitment to a sustainable cotton sector for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.

History

In 2019, four major cotton-producing countries located in sub-Saharan Africa, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali proposed the celebration of World Cotton Day at the  World Trade Organization (WTO). The proposal was instantly accepted by the WTO and October 7 was chosen as the day of celebration. Thus, the world’s first cotton day was observed on October 7, 2019, with events organized by WTO in collaboration with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Trade Center, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Two years later, in 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution (A/RES/75/318) proclaiming World Cotton Day on August 30, 2021.
