Prabhu completed his schooling from Sharadashram Vidya Mandir and earned a Bachelor in Commerce with Honors from M.L. Dahanukar College, both from Mumbai. Suresh Prabhu Political Career
Early Career
Suresh Prabhu became a Member of Parliament from Lok Sabha as a member of the Shiv Sena political party in 1996. the same year, he was appointed as the Union Minister for Industry but served the position for only 16 days. Even in this short period of time, Prabhu was able to bring transparency in functioning and fuel clearance of pending works. From 1998 to 1998, Prabhu served as the Union Minister For Environment and Forests for 1 year, and 208 days, and during this period he played many important roles. He played a big part in setting up of Indian Centre for the Promotion of Cleaner Technologies, strengthened the monitoring system in environmental clearances, and worked immensely toward sustainable utilization and equitable sharing of biological resources, etc.
In 2000, Suresh was appointed as the Union Power Minister where he undertook many crucial tasks including resource planning for building additional power generation capacity. He also led the formation of the National Power Grid to enable power transfer from power surplus regions to power deficit regions. Suresh was then appointed in 2002 as the Chairperson of the Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers where he managed the in-depth program of the Government of India. The Interlinking of Rivers was a major step toward fighting against water stress by connecting major rivers of the country.
Move to BJP & Later Years
After switching to the political party Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Suresh Prabhu became a Cabinet minister in the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He served as the Union Railway Minister of India from 2014 to 2017 where he brought many significant changes. He launched an integrated mobile app for all Railway-related services, High-speed free Wi-Fi at 140+ stations, a new catering policy, and an online platform for employees to lodge their grievances named “Nivaran”. Prabhu even eliminated interviews for all recruitment for Staff at Group C & D level in railways.
For the period of 2017 to 2019, Prabhu served as Union Commerce & Industry Minister and introduced the first-ever Agriculture Export Policy in India to tackle barriers in the agricultural sector. He also held the position of Union Civil Aviation Minister from 2018 to 2019 where he released India’s first-ever National Air Cargo Policy, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Policy, National Green Aviation Policy, and Drone Policy Initiative.
