Professional Career of Chris Sununu

Early Years & Executive Council

Chris Sununu started his first job as an environmental engineer where he designed solutions for cleaning up waste sites. He later founded Sununu Enterprises which was a family business and strategic consulting group focused on real estate development, business acquisitions, and venture technologies. Through his company, Chris helped a group of investors buy Waterville Valley Resort and served himself as its CEO.

From 2011 to 2017, Sununu served in the New Hampshire Executive Council. As a council member, Sununu helped develop the blueprint for the 10-Year Plan (2017–2026) for the governor of New Hampshire. His other major contribution involved leading public hearings to review proposals for Managed Medicaid.

Managed Medicaid was a healthcare system to help New Hampshire Medicaid recipients get wellness and prevention programs as a part of their Medicaid benefits.

Gubernatorial Election of New Hampshire

Sununu ran for the New Hampshire governor’s election in 2016 and defeated Democrat Colin Van Ostern by a small margin of 2.27%. With this win, he became the first Republican governor of New Hampshire since 2002. With his further win in the 2018 election, Chris became the first incumbent Republican to win reelection as governor since 1994. In the election, he defeated Democrat Molly Kelly.

In 2019, Chris expressed his desire to run for a third term and defeated Dan Feltes with a wide margin to become governor for a third time. He again became the first Republican to be elected to a third term as governor since 1986 when his father John H. Sununu was reelected for his third and final term. Sununu was also the first person ever to get more than half a million votes in a New Hampshire gubernatorial election.

Chris ran for a fourth term and won re-election against Tom Sherman. Sununu became the first Republican to win a fourth term as governor in New Hampshire.

Career & Important Milestones as Governor

As a governor of New Hampshire, Sununu has brought several reforms to the state. In 2020, he called out for passing a law that eliminates the tax on dividends and interest income by 2026. His reason for this was to provide relief to the senior citizens living off of these as their only source of income.

Sununu has also established the Commission on Law Enforcement Accountability, Community, and Transparency to examine police training and to report and investigate police misconduct. This commission was found in response to the murder of George Floyd. His actions during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain the safety of citizen and keep the economy afloat was praiseworthy.

Under his leadership, New Hampshire is ranked the #1 state in the country for personal freedoms and Sununu is named the nation’s most fiscally responsible governor by Cato Institute.

Presidential Campaign 2024

Earlier, Chris expressed his consideration for becoming a presidential candidate for the 2024 elections but later chose not to. Instead of opposing Trump in primaries, he has decided to support him if Trump wins the nomination.
