Joe Manchin was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. His father John Manchin was of Italian descent. On the other hand, his mother Mary O was from a family of Czechoslovak immigrants.
Manchin was the second of five children of his parents. He got into politics through inheritance. Both his father and grandfather served as mayor of Farmington.

Entry into politics
At the age of 35, Joe Manchin entered into politics by winning an election into the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982.
Next Year, he was elected to the West Virginia Senate. He served in this position before running for governor in 1996. However, he lost the election to democrat Charlotte Pritt.
