Joe Manchin was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. His father John Manchin was of Italian descent. On the other hand, his mother Mary O was from a family of Czechoslovak immigrants.
Manchin was the second of five children of his parents. He got into politics through inheritance. Both his father and grandfather served as mayor of Farmington.
Additionally, Machin’s uncle, A. James Manchin was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and worked as West Virginia Secretary of State and Treasurer.
Joe attended Farmington High School in 1965 before joining West Virginia University on a football scholarship. Unfortunately, Manchin had to leave football due to an injury. He eventually graduated with a degree in business administration.

Entry into politics
At the age of 35, Joe Manchin entered into politics by winning an election into the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982.
Next Year, he was elected to the West Virginia Senate. He served in this position before running for governor in 1996. However, he lost the election to democrat Charlotte Pritt.
Manchin was then elected as the Secretary of State of West Virginia in 2000. A few years later in 2004, he won the 2004 West Virginia gubernatorial election defeating Republican Monty Warner.
