After the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of OTT platforms in India, various media outlets including the Print and Al Jazeera declared the downfall of Bollywood and overall Indian cinema. 

However, films like Jawan and Gadar 2 proved all of them wrong and smashed all previous box office records. The South Indian film industry was never affected. Films featuring superstar Prabhas, Allu Arjun, and more are creating havoc at the ticket counters.

If we take a look at the top 10 highest-grossing films in India, we will see that most of them are mass entertainers. You should also note that the box office collection of a film is not the only parameter of its quality. In fact, many Oscar-nominated movies were a failure at the box office.

1. Dangal – Rs. 2,023.81 Crore

The amazing record of Dangal is still unbroken. This Aamir Khan starer movie is still the highest-grossing Indian movie ever. According to Box Office India (BOI) reports, the worldwide earnings of Dangal were more than 2,023 crore. 

Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, played the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler who trained her daughters to be Commonwealth champions. The review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes has 88% positive reviews for Dangal with an average 8.1/10 ratings.

One of the reasons behind Dangal’s huge collection is its overseas success. The movie was a huge hit in Chinese markets with 45,984,728 estimated footfalls. Nicola Chan of South China Morning Post gave the perfect 5 out of 5 rating to Dangal.     

2. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – Rs. 1,810.60 Crore

The producers of Baahubali 2 took a great risk when they invested more than 250 crore rupees to make this movie. It was the most expensive Indian movie at that time. Fortunately, their investments paid off and it became one of the most loved and highest-grossing movies from India.

Earlier, the film was released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam languages. After its huge success, it was also dubbed in Japanese, Chinese, and Russian. According to Hindustan Times, the worldwide collections of Baahubali: The Conclusion easily beat the figures of movies like Saaho, KGF, and Saaho. 

3. RRR – Rs. 1,387.26 Crore

RRR is one of the most iconic Indian movies. It is the third Indian and first Telugu movie to receive a nomination for the Golden Globe Awards. One of its songs “Naatu Naatu” also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards.

Roudram Ranam Rudhiram or RRR, is a masterpiece of legendary director S.S. Rajamouli. He beautifully depicted the condition of India under the British Raj. Josh Hurtado of The Austin Chronicle, called RRR a “bromantic action nirvana”. According to Indian Express, the overall collections of RRR were more than 1,300 crore rupees.

4. K.G.F: Chapter 2 – Rs. 1240 Crore

KGF: Chapter 2 is the 2nd instalment of the three-part movie series KGF. The film was released in Kannada in 2022 along with its dubbed Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam versions.

With its amazing star cast featuring Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Prakash Raj, and Raveena Tandon, the movie shattered many box office records within days of its release. It is also the most expensive Kannada movie ever made. However, it recovered all the investments with a sizable profit for makers

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 4.5 stars out of 5. According to Hindustan Times, KGF Chapter 2 worldwide collection is around 1,240 crore rupees.

5. Jawan – Rs. 1,148.32 Crore

Jawan is the highest-grossing Indian movie of 2023. According to Bollywood Hungama, the movie’s box office collection is more than 1,148.32 Crore rupees. Jawan features Shahrukh Khan in the lead role with Deepika Padukone, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, and Sanya Malhotra playing supporting roles.

It is also South Indian director Atlee’s first Hindi movie. Another reason to love Jawan is how it portrays the problem of corruption in India. As per NDTV, Allu Arjun was approached to play a cameo role in Jawan. However, he declined due to his commitments to Pushpa 2.  

6. Pathaan – Rs. 1,050.30 Crore

2023 has been a dream year for Shahrukh Khan. In addition to Jawan, his movie Pathaan also did amazingly well at the ticket counters. As per Bollywood Hungama, the film earned Rs. 1,050 crore worldwide.

Apart from Shahrukh, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, and Dimple Kapadia also played important characters in the movie. Pathaan was also released in Bangladesh, becoming the first Hindi movie to be released in the country.

7. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Rs. 910.28 Crore

Bajrangi Bhaijaan is indeed one of the most loved and successful Salman Khan movies ever. It helped him win a Filmfare award for the best actor. Bajrangi Bhaijaan was one of those rare films that was appreciated not only in India but also in Pakistan.

The movie showcased the story of a six-year-old mute Pakistani girl who was left in India during her parent’s visit to Delhi. Srijana Mitra Das of Times of India labelled Bajrangi Bhaijaan Salman’s most daring film.

8. PK – Rs. 750.59 Crore

Directed by legendary Rajkumar Hirani, PK is one of those movies that make us think about the society in which we are living. Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma played lead roles in the movie.

In addition to India, the film also did good business in South Korea, China, the UK, and China.

9. 2.0 – Rs. 699 Crore

Our list is incomplete without a Rajinikanth movie. 2.0 is the most successful movie from Rajnikanth in terms of box office collection. To date, 2.0 is also the most expensive Indian movie with a budget of around 550 crore. Rajinikanth played a triple role in 2.0 and Akshay Kumar the role of a villain. It gets mediocre reviews from critics. Still, Rajni’s stardom was able to make 2.0 a box-office hit. 

10. Gadar 2 – Rs. 691.08 Crore

Gadar 2 is a movie that will be remembered forever for the historic comeback by Sunny Deol. The film brought unprecedented patriotism to Indians. Such a craze for a Sunny Deol movie was never seen since the 1990s.

The budget of this movie was just 60 crore rupees. Still, it was able to gross 691 crore rupees worldwide. It is a sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha which was released in 2001. According to Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama, “Gadar 2 is old-school desi entertainment at its best”.
