Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha – Story behind Papmochani Ekadashi

The story behind Papmochani Ekadashi is very interesting. It is believed that once there was a sage named Medhavi. He was a true devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to live in the Chitraratha forest and perform meditation and Penance. Usually, the same was visited by Lord Indira along with many Apsaras as it was full of beautiful flowers. One day, Lord Indira saw Medhavi and thought if this sage continues to penance like this then he will get a very high position in heaven. So, he decided to distract Sage Medhavi with the help of Apsaras. However, due to the immense discipline of Medhavi, Indira was not able to distract him at all.

Among all Apsaras, Manjughosha was the one who tried the most to distract the Sage Medhavi. However, despite all her efforts, she was unsuccessful in her attempts. So, Manjughosha decided to set up a hermitage and started to live near the ashram of Medhavi. Manjughosha used to sign in a very melodious voice. Seeing her singing so beautifully, Lord Kamdev got impressed. So, to help her, Lord Kamdev shoots an arrow of love and draws the attention of Sage Medhavi towards Manjughosha.

Medhavi fell in love with Manjughosha and starts living with her. However, after some time, Manjughosha lost her interest and want to free herself from the sage. So, asked permission to leave Medhavi. This makes sage Medhavi realize that he was misguided and cheated. He was distracted from his path of penance and meditation. Then, angry Sage Medhavi cursed Manjughosha.

Later, Medhavi went to the ashram of his father Sage Chyavana. Then, Sage Chyavana advised both Medhavi and Manjughosha to observe fast on Papamochani Ekadashi to please Lord Vishnu and get rid of their sins.
