Some Major Festivals of Kerala

Festivals in Kerala are celebrated with full excitement and every tradition is followed culturally. Let us know a little bit about some major festivals celebrated in the state of Kerala.

  1. Onam– Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated only in the state of Kerala and generally falls in the month of August or September. Some celebratory traditions of Onam are boat races, tiger dances, flower rangoli, women’s dance, mask dance, martial arts, etc. This festival commemorates King Mahabali and it is believed that on the day of Onam his soul visits Kerala.
  2. Vishu– Vishu marks the beginning of new year in the state of Kerala and is celebrated in some other states too but with different names. On the day of Vishu, people wear new clothes (tradition called as Vishukodi) and elders give money to younger family members (tradition called as Vishukkaineetam. Lord Krishna is worshiped on the occasion of Vishu who is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
  3. Thiruvathira– Thiruvathira or Thiruvathirai (celebrated as Arudhra Darisanam in Tamil Nadu) is a major Hindu festival. It is believed that on this day Goddess Parvathi met Lord Shiva after her long penance and Lord Shiva took her as his equal partner. People normally observe a fast on this day and abstain from rice-based food. Those who do not observe a fast also abstain from rice-based food.
