Rabindranath Tagore was born as Robindronath Thakur on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. His father was Debendranath Tagore, a religious reformer and his mother was Sarada Devi and Rabindranath was the youngest of their 13 surviving children. His mother died when he was very young and his father traveled a lot and therefore he was mostly raised by the house servants.
