Every year Visvesvaraya Jayanti is observed on 15th September that commemorates the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the greatest engineers of India. In his honor, September 15 is also celebrated as National Engineers Day in the country. For his contributions towards the development of the country, he was given the title of Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V. Bharat Ratna was also awarded to Sir MV by the independent India in the year 1955. His most renowned work was the development of Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysuru of which he was the chief engineer. About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

Personal Life

Sir M Visvesvaraya, more commonly known as Sir MV, was born on 15 September 1860 in a Telugu Brahmin family, in Muddenahalli of Mysore kingdom. He was a civil engineer, statesman and the also the nineteenth Diwan of Mysore who served for a period of seven years, from 1912 to 1919. Sir MV obtained the degree of engineering, one of the highest degrees of his time, from the College of Engineering, Pune, one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia.

Achievements

The notable works of Sir M Visvesvaraya include development of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysuru, irrigation system implementation in the Deccan Plateau, flood protection system for city of Hyderabad, etc. He also played a major role in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion. It was based on the technical advice given by Visvesvaraya that the Mokama Bridge over Ganga was built in Bihar. During the period he served as the Diwan of Mysore, M Visvesvaraya founded the Mysore Soap Factory, Bangalore Agricultural University, State Bank of Mysore, Mysore Iron and Steel Works, Government Engineering College (now known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering) and many other industries. These industries were responsible for providing employment to thousands of people. It is because of the major contribution he made for development of Mysore that he was awarded the title of Father of Modern Mysore State.

Awards

Apart from the award of Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire given by the British India, Sir MV was also awarded the nation’s highest honor, the Bharat Ratna, after the independence of India. He also received an honorary membership of London Institution of Civil Engineers, a fellowship from the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), and several other degrees from eight universities of the country. Visvesvaraya also served as the president of the 1923 session of the Indian Science Congress.

To honor the contribution of one of the greatest engineers of India, it was decided that his birth anniversary will be observed and celebrated as National Engineer’s Day in the country. Thus, 15 September began to be celebrated as Engineer’s Day all around the country.

Visvesvaraya Jayanti is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in memory of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of the greatest engineers of all time. At the same time, this day also honors all the engineers in the country who work hard for its development. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, a memorial is held for him at his birthplace in Muddenahalli.

The memorial is managed by Visvesvaraya National Memorial Trust and exhibits the awards, titles and personal belongings of Sir MV, including his living room, spectacles, cups, books,  etc. The memorial is organized adjacent to his house, which is considered as a temple by the local people of Muddenahalli. Senior ministers of the nation also pay tribute to Sir M Visvesvaraya and address him as a great engineer and statesman on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
