Thaipusam is a major festival celebrated by Tamil speaking people all around the world. Lord Skanda (Kartikeya), who is known as Murugan in south India, is worshiped on the day of Thaipusam.

As per the legend, once there was an evil asura named Soorapadam who defeated the Devas and started ruling the heaven and the earth. With nowhere left to go, the Devas reached Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and asked for their help in defeating and killing Soorapadam. Upon hearing their request, Lord Shiva created a warrior from his own power and named him Skanda. Skanda brought all the celestial forces together and as their leader defeated the evil demon Soorapadam. Skanda was given a spear by Goddess Parvati using which he was able to defeat the whole demon force. The festival of Thaipusam is celebrated to mark the receiving of spear by Lord Skanda and his victory over the demons.

While some believe Thaipusam to be day on which Skanda got spear from his mother and killed the asura, some people also believe this day to be the birth day of Lord Skanda. However, as per some sources, Skanda birth day falls in the Vaikhasi month (May/June) and is celebrated as Vaikhasi Vishakam.
