UPSC Konkani Syllabus

Konkani can be selected as an optional subject by those appearing for the UPSC IAS examination. Candidates preparing for this paper must gain familiarity with the syllabus beforehand.  The syllabus will comprise of all the important topics from which the questions will be asked in the exam. This article provides the details related to the UPSC Konkani syllabus 2023 for the aspirants who have selected this as their optional paper. It is advised not to leave any topic mentioned in this syllabus as each and every topic is equally important from the exam point of view.

Konkani Syllabus for UPSC Civil Services

Different topics related to Konkani language and literature will be included in the UPSC Konkani syllabus 2023. Candidates should carefully check the complete syllabus and prepare for their exams accordingly. All the questions asked in the exam are to be answered in Konkani language only.

Paper I Syllabus

Section A

History of the Konkani Language:

  • Major variants of Konkani and their linguistic features
  • Origin and development of the language and influences on it
  • Old Standard Konkani, New Standard and Standardization problems
  • Grammatical and lexicographic work in Konkani, including a study of cases, adverbs, indeclinable and voices

Section B

History of Konkani Literature

Candidates would be expected to be well-acquainted with Konkani literature and its social and cultural background and consider the problems and issues arising out of them.

  • Indian and Western influences on Konkani literature, from the earliest to modern times
  • History of Konkani literature from its probable source to the present times, with emphasis on its major works, writers and movements
  • Modern literary trends in the various genres and regions including a study of Konkani folklore
  • Social and cultural background of the making of Konkani literature from time to time

Paper II Syllabus

Textual Criticism of Konkani Literature

The paper will be designed to test the candidate’s critical and analytical abilities. Candidates would be expected to be well-acquainted with Konkani Literature and required to have first-hand reading of the following texts:
