During the Navratri festival, Maha Saptami is commemorated. The seventh day, which is known as Maha Saptami, is crucial during the Durga Puja festival, which lasts for nine days. According to the Hindu calendar, Chaitra in the period of Chaitra is marked on the day after the full moon on the seventh day of the first lunar fortnight. The Gregorian calendar puts a whole day on or around the beginning of the month of March or April.

Maha Saptami Significance

For followers, Maha Saptami is significant because it is the day on which they adore Goddess Durga and seek her graces. During the nine-day Chaitra Navratri celebration, people idolize and give prayers to the Hindu goddess Shakti (the nine days of Shakti worship).

Many Hindus trust that on the day of Durga Puja, the goddess Durga reveals herself in nine distinct ways. In Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and other southern states, Gudi Padwa, also regarded as the start of the Hindu New Year, is celebrated.

Maha Saptami Rituals

On this particular day of Maha Saptami, worshippers rise early in the morning, bathe in holy water, and then worship Devi Shakti at the temple.
Distinctive dishes are prepared and given to the god, after which the meal is shared among the visitors as Prasad (thanksgiving).
The trash is piled up and decorated with lights to make it seem more appealing.
According to customs and traditions, Maha Saptami marks the beginning of both the Maha Puja and the Kalratri Puja on that particular day.
This day is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Saraswati, which is also observed by certain devotees on the day of Maha Saptami. Saraswati Puja is performed by devotees of Goddess Saraswati on this day.

Maha Saptami (Story of Nine Plants)

The festivities and feasts associated with Maha Saptami start with the giving of a holy bath to the Nine Holy Women of Navapatrika. Turmeric, Banana, Paddy, Jayanti, Colacassia, Ashoka, Arum Plant, Pomegranate, and Bel consist of nine distinct plants.

The many types of plants are connected with the two Koyala and Aparajita species, which results in the formation of Navapatrika. This shows the victory of Durga, the goddess, over her adversary, the demon Mahishasura.

Eight Ashtanayikas appeared to help Maa Durga in her battle against Mahishasura. The nine plants that may be found here each represents one of the eight battle partners and the Hindu goddess Durga.

Maha Saptami 2023 Date

A total of 10 days are dedicated to the celebration of Durga Puja, with the first and final five days being unique festivities that are observed as public holidays in certain Indian states throughout the celebrations.

Durga Ashtami: The eighth day of Durga Puja festivities is dedicated to the adoration of Durga’s weapons.

Mahalaya: The Durga Puja celebration begins with Mahalaya.

Vijaya Dashami: It is also referred as Dashain, the tenth day of Navratri, or Durgotsav, and it celebrates the day when Durga rode into battle on a lion to defeat the demon Mahisasura and kill him.

Maha Navami: This is the ninth day of the Durga Puja celebrations. This day commemorates Durga’s triumph over the wicked buffalo demon Mahishasura, who was defeated by Durga.
