It includes- Tandur red gram of Telangana, gamocha of Assam, Alibag white onion of Maharashtra, and Raktsey Karpo apricot of Ladakh among others.

GI stands for Geographical Indication (GI) in India. A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is given to an entrepreneur or a group of businessmen of a particular area/ state/ country to manufacturer goods of exemplary quality. These tags are issued according to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,1999. However, it was implemented on 15th September 2003. In the year 2019, four new GI tags were introduced by the government.

About Geographical Indication (GI) Tag

Typically, GI tags are issued for products like agricultural goods, wine and spirit drinks, foodstuff, handicrafts, and industrial products.

Issuance of an GI tag makes sure that only the authorized and registered manufacturers are allowed to use the famous product name. For example – a GI tag is issued in the name of Darjeeling Tea. Producers of Darjeeling Tea can not use the term “Darjeeling” if the tea is grown in their tea gardens or not produced as per the procedure set out in the code of practice for the geographical indication.

  • Top 5 states in India which holds maximum number of GI tags includes Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala.
  • Tamil Nadu and Karntaka holds maximum number of GI tags followed by Kerala with 35 GI tag, Uttar Pradesh with 34 GI tag and Maharashtra with 31 GI tag.

Objectives behind a GI Tag

The main motive of the Geographical Indication Tag is to restrict the unauthorized use of a Registered Geographical Indication by other manufactures/ sellers. There are many other benefits of the GI tags are given below.

  • It provides legal security for the manufacturer of Unique goods originating from a particular place in the Country.
  • The GI tag also helps customers to get the finest quality products of their desired quality.
  • The GI tag is an assurance of authenticity. If manufacturers have a GI Tag then it is an indication that the product they are manufacturing is genuine.
  • It also enhances and promotes goodwill of manufacturers of GI tag goods by boosting the product demand in the national and international markets.

  2. Hi, last February’22 we became the ‘Authorize user’ for “Bengal Dokra” (AU/11374/GI/563/24). When I will get the ‘GI Certificate’ ?
    From where I will get required marketing support for my GI tagged products ?
    Whether our government will help me towards the promotion of my GI products?
    Is their any body, who can help us for international marketing of my GI products ?
