About Geographical Indication (GI) Tag
A GI tag is an abbreviation of Geographical Indication. Basically, it is a name or sign given to certain products that are related to a specific geographical location like region, town, or country. We can also say that Geographical Indication is a certificate issued for a product indicating that the product has a certain specific quality, or has a particular reputation because of its geographical location.
Typically, GI tags are issued for products like agricultural goods, wine and spirit drinks, foodstuff, handicrafts, and industrial products.
Issuance of an GI tag makes sure that only the authorized and registered manufacturers are allowed to use the famous product name. For example – a GI tag is issued in the name of Darjeeling Tea. Producers of Darjeeling Tea can not use the term “Darjeeling” if the tea is grown in their tea gardens or not produced as per the procedure set out in the code of practice for the geographical indication.
