The day signifies July 11, 1987, the approximate date on which the world’s population crossed the five billion mark. The main goal behind observing the day is to increase people’s awareness on various population issues. These issues include family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health as well as basic human rights.

When the world population reached five billion, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989 launched World Population Day.

It was decided that World Population Day will be observed on July 11 owing to the public interest in observing Five Billion Day on the same day in 1987 when the mark of five billion was reached by world’s population.
