World Day of International Justice 2023: Date, Theme, History, Significance
Every year July 17 is observed as the World Day of International Justice all over the world. The day aims at drawing attention of people worldwide to come forward in support justice, promote victims’ rights and do their part helping prevent crimes that threaten the peace and security of the world. The day also highlights the importance of the International Criminal Court and the work it does to bring justice for victims.
17 July was chosen as the Day of International Criminal Justice to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the ICC (International Criminal Court), on the same day in 1998. The International Criminal Court seeks to protect people from crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide and the crime of aggression.

World Day of International Justice Significance
To remind people the importance of fighting against war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide and to bring justice to the victims of crimes, it is considered vital to mark a day for it. In the view of this, the celebration of International Justice Day came into being. The day highlights the significant role that the civil society members play in ensuring that the member states of International criminal Court works under proper regulation and that it continues its work of bringing justice to the crime victims.
The World Day of International Justice is celebrated to mark the anniversary of adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998. The day calls countries and individuals to join the fight against crimes of all kinds and help find the victims proper justice. The work of the ICC in bringing down the perpetrators of crimes and offering them suitable punishment is also appreciated on the International Justice Day.
History
At the Review Conference of the Rome Statute held in Kampala (Uganda) on 1 June 2010, a resolution was passed for observing a day to appreciate the work of International Criminal Court and the work it does fighting against crime. The Assembly of State Parties decided to celebrate the Day of International Criminal Justice or World Day for International Justice every year on July 17.
The day was chosen as it marks the anniversary of adoption of a treaty that led to the establishment of International Criminal Court. More than 139 countries signed the Court’s treaty and around 80 states representative of every region of the world approved it. Thus, every year, July 17 is observed as the World Day for International Justice with great enthusiasm.
World Day of International Justice Celebrations
To celebrate the World Day for International Justice and extend support to the international criminal court for its work, events are hosted in all parts of the world. The day also pays tribute to the victims of crimes and gives them a hope of awaiting justice.
Many organizations working against violence, genocides and crimes come forward and conduct multiple events to mark this day.
