The history of programming is quite long, more than around 200 years old and to celebrate this rich history of programming and the progress it has made over years, September 13 will be celebrated as Day of the Programmer 2023.

History of Programmers Day Observation

The Day of the Programmer is a day of international significance which is observed on the 256th day of each year. It falls on September 13 during common years and on September 12 in leap years. The proposal for observing this day was put forward by two employees of a software company Parallel Technologies, Valentin Balt and Michael Cherviakov in 2002.

They started gathering signatures on their petition to be put forward before the government of Russia to recognize the 256th day of the year as the official Day of the Programmer. Finally on July 24, 2009, the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of Russia issued a draft proposing celebration of a new professional holiday, Day of the Programmer. On September 11, 2009, the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed the decree.

There are very general celebrations held on the Day of the Programmer and programmers all around the world are greeted with “Happy Programmer’s Day”. Programmers also observe this day on social media and online forums with the hashtag mention of this day and mentioning their peers in various posts.
