World Architecture Day Significance

Architecture is not just about buildings and projects but incorporates every aspect of human life. There are many ways in which architecture impacts society and is crucial for the development of human race. The World Architecture Day was created with this purpose and aims to celebrate and honor the architecture industry as a whole. It is celebrated every year on first Monday of October.

History of World Architecture Day Celebration

The World Architecture Day was created in 1985 by the International Union of Architects (UIA). The day was meant to draw attention of public and professionals to problems concerning cities and habitat and was therefore decided to be observed parallel to the UN World Habitat Day.

It was thus adopted that the World Architecture Day will be celebrated on the first Monday of October, same as UN World Habitat Day.

What is International Union of Architects (UIA)?

The International Union of Architects or Union internationale des Architectes (UIA) is an international NGO that represents architects all around the world. It was formed from the b merger of the Comité permanent international des Architectes and the Reunion International des Architectes in 1948. Located in Switzerland, the organization has its headquarters in Paris and is the only global architecture organization by most United Nations agencies.

The Union is represented in over 100 countries and territories through its Member Sections. It is geographically grouped into five regions- Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East, The Americas, Asia and Oceania and Africa.

World Architecture Day Celebration

World Architecture Day will be observed on October 3 with events conducted all over the world. Several architecture associations and organizations around the world arrange events in line with the theme decided by the UIA. The UIA itself also conducts seminars and other similar events to celebrate the World Architecture Day. If any such event is happening in your area, you can actively take part in them.
