Significance of World Mental Health Day

Every year October 10 is celebrated as World Mental Health Day and it provides a platform for the stakeholders and advocates of mental health to fight mental illness. The objective of this day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and look for ways to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. People all around the globe are urged by WHO to work in coordination to find what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

World Health Organization supports the World Mental Health Day by raising awareness on mental health issues using its strong relationships with the Ministries of health and civil society organizations across the globe. The organization also supports with developing technical and communication material.

History of World Mental Health Day

The initiative to observe World Mental Health Day was proposed by in 1992 by the Deputy Secretary General of World Federation for Mental Health, Richard Hunter. The initiative was successfully adopted and the first World Mental Health Day was observed on October 10, 1992.

The first celebration occurred without any specific but since 1994, the day is observed with a particular theme and the celebrations revolve around this theme. The first ever them for World Mental Health Day was ‘Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World’.
