World Stroke Day Significance
Stroke is considered as a widespread health issue all over the world and currently is the single largest cause of disability and the second largest cause of death globally. Taking the seriousness of the strokes in account, their frequency and how less people know about it, it was deemed necessary to observe a day of awareness regarding stroke and its prevention.

History of World Stroke Day Observation
World Stroke Day was established in 2004 by the World Stroke Organization at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada. The idea of observing the day was presented by Dr. Vladimir Hachinski and October 29 was chosen as the day of celebration.
Dr. Hachinski also created a working group which was incorporated into a World Stroke Proclamation in October 2006. In 2006, the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation merged to form the World Stroke Organization and it took over the management of World Stroke Day.
The first World Stroke Day was observed on October 29, 2004. celebrities such as Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, former Miss Egypt Dalia El Behery and cyclist Alberto Contador are goodwill ambassadors of World Stroke Campaign.

World Stroke Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the serious nature and high rates of stroke. It is also a platform for the WSD advocates to come together and talk about about the ways in which the burden of stroke can be reduced through better public awareness.

The World Stroke Organization also runs a campaign every year for the cause and also work towards support for stroke survivors and caregivers.
