Significance of World Vasectomy Day

Vasectomy is a simple yet very effective procedure of birth control. It is also a quite safe and reversible procedure that prevents unwanted pregnancies and help in family planning and management in a better way. World Vasectomy Day is therefore observed to encourage men to consider the choice of vasectomy as contraception. WVD is not only an important day but a movement to educate people globally about an often-overlooked form of family planning. This special day is also about encouraging men to share reproductive responsibilities and become an active part of the conversation.

History of World Vasectomy Day

World Vasectomy Day was established by the American film-maker Jonathan Stack in 2013. Stack was working on a documentary about the decision of having a vasectomy when the idea of celebrating the day occurred to him. The main goal was to increase awareness about vasectomy and to involve men in family planning decisions and educate them about vasectomies as a simple way of taking responsibility for birth control. Dr Douglas Stein performed vasectomies in front of an audience at the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus). The idea was to launch the inaugural World Vasectomy Day with the world’s first live-streamed vasectomy. Dr Stein is a renowned urologist and also the co-founder of the World Vasectomy Day Organization along with Jonathan Stack.

World Vasectomy Day Organization

The World Vasectomy Day is a registered nonprofit organization that was founded in 2013 by Jonathan Stack and Dr Douglas Stein. WVD is the largest male-focused sexual and reproductive health movement that is committed to encourage and educate people about the benefits of involvement of men in family planning and reproductive health. Their mission is to “create a global movement to increase male engagement in family planning, increase investment in sexual & reproductive healthcare for men and expand access to vasectomy training and services”. The organization advocates men taking equal responsibility for family planning and have access to sexual & reproductive healthcare.

World Vasectomy Day Celebration 2023

November 17 is observed as World Vasectomy Day and will be celebrated with great enthusiasm all around the world. It is one of the major days in November. On this occasion, the WVD team travels from country to country to host events and seminars along with family planning organizations, doctors and reproductive health advocates. The day also provides an opportunity to bring communities together and acknowledge the effort of men and women who make World Vasectomy Day possible. Many local organizations also host webinars to share more knowledge co-jointly with the WVD community. The year 2023 will celebrate 11th anniversary of World vasectomy Day and will be celebrated with a grand summit organized by the WVD organization.
