Hakeem Jeffries was born on 4 August 1970 in New York City, New York to Laneda Jeffries and Marland Jeffries. His mother was a social worker while his father was a state substance-abuse counselor. He also has a younger brother, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, who is an associate professor of history at Ohio State University and also a renowned author. Hakeem’s uncle Leonard Jeffery was also a well-known political scientist, historian and educator.
Jeffries did his graduation from Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, earning a Master of Public Policy degree in 1994. He then attended New York University School of Law, where he graduated in 1997 with a Juris Doctor degree. Jeffries is married to Kennisandra Arciniegas-Jeffries who is a social worker with 1199 SEIU’s Benefit Fund and they have two sons together.

Hakeem Jeffries in the U.S. House of Representatives
Jeffries made his entry into politics after winning the New York State Assembly election in 2006, defeating Bill Batson and Freddie Hamilton. He served as the Member of the New York State Assembly from the 57th district from 2007 to 2012.
in January 2012, Jeffries announced that he would give up his Assembly seat and run for the US House from New York’s 8th congressional district. He was supported by former Mayor Ed Koch, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Councilman David Greenfield, and Assemblyman Dov Hikind. In the primary elections held in June that year, Jeffries won the election defeating his opponent Charles Barron with 72:28 percent votes. He was sworn in to the 113th Congress on January 3, 2013.

The New York Democrats have elected Hakeem Jeffries as their house leader who will lead the party in the United States House of Representative. Jeffries is all set to succeed the previous speaker Nancy Pelosi, who served in the prior session of Congress when the Democrats were in the majority. Currently, the Democrat will be the minority party in the house with the Republican as majority. Jeffries was elected as the party leader during a closed-door election in November where he ran unopposed to win the position.
