India’s first Motor Vessel cruise, Ganga Vilas, was flagged off from Varanasi by the Prime Minister via video conferencing on 13 January 2023. The 62-metre-long boat will take tourists on a cruise along the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers through the Himalayan foothills. The boat, an idea of the state government of Uttar Pradesh, is expected to travel for 3200 kilometres, a distance greater than the distance between Gujarat and Assam.
Many famous personalities were present at the launch event including the present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the Union Minister of Port Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.
The Prime Minister also tweeted about the event – “Today, the world’s longest river cruise – Ganga Vilas, has embarked on a journey between Kashi and Dibrugarh. Due to this many tourist places of Eastern India are going to benefit.”
Apart from the PM, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also tweeted – “World’s #LongestRiverCruise to be flagged off by Hon’ble Prime Minister #GangaVilas to start from Varanasi on river #Ganga to Dibrugarh on river #Brahmaputra via Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route to give an impetus to tourism & employment generation”

This Cruise will cover 3,200 kilometres and make multiple stops during its 51-day journey in India and Bangladesh. The luxury cruise will travel over 27 river systems in five Indian and Bangladeshi states.
