Asa Hutchinson was born on December 3, 1950, in Bentonville, Arkansas, to Coral Virginia, and John Malcolm Hutchinson Sr. In 1972, Asa received his bachelor’s degree in accounting (BA) from Bob Jones University in South Carolina. He later earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1975.

Business career
Asa established a consulting firm, Hutchinson Group, LLC, in 2005 with partners Betty Guhman and Kirk Tompkins. Simultaneously he also accepted a contract for a one-year position with Venable LLP but ended it later to focus on his gubernatorial campaign and his consulting firm. Asa made his first unsuccessful attempt in politics in 1986 when he ran against incumbent Democratic senator and former governor Dale Bumpers.

Political career
In 1990, Hutchinson ran for attorney general of Arkansas against Winston Bryant but lost in a close race. Hutchinson later became the co-chairperson of the Arkansas Republican Party with Sheffield Nelson. In 1996, Hutchinson ran for Arkansas’s third congressional district seat and won. In 1998, he was reelected with no difficulty, and again in 2002 with no opposition.
Hutchinson announced his candidacy for governor of Arkansas in 2006. He was elected the primary candidate from the Republican party but later lost the Governor’s election to the Democratic nominee Mike Beebe. He again became the nominee for the election in 2014 and won the election this time to become the 46th Governor of Arkansas. He was elected for the post for another term and held the Governor’s office from 2015 to 2023.

In 2001, when George W. Bush became the president of the US, he appointed Hutchinson as the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In 2001, after the tragic September 11 attacks, Congress created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). President Bush again suggested Hutchinson as the leader of the Border and Transportation Security Directorate, a division of the DHS and the Senate confirmed their consent on January 23, 2003. Hutchinson held the office for two years and left on March 1, 2005, as its Undersecretary.

Hutchinson announced in May 2022 that he would consider running for president in 2024 even if Donald Trump ran again. He declared his final candidacy on April 2, 2023, and also called on former President Donald Trump to drop out of the race following his indictment.
