Chris Rock was born on February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina to Rosalie and Julius Rock. His father was a truck driver and newspaper deliveryman while his mother was a teacher and social worker for the mentally handicapped. Rock was the eldest of seven children. His three younger brothers are also in the entertainment business.

In 1996, Rock married Malaak Compton-Rock, the founder and executive director of a non-profit, full-service hair salon, StyleWorks. The salon provides free services for women who leave welfare and enter the workforce. The couple got divorced in 2016. Since 2022, Rock is allegedly dating actress and director Lake Bell.

In 1984 Rock began working as a stand-up comedian in nightclubs. He was befriended and mentored by Eddie Murphy who liked his act and gave Rock his first role in the film Beverly Hills Cop II which also turned out to be Rock’s big break. He was later cast as a member of the sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1993, gaining national exposure. In 1994, Rock appeared in Big Ass Jokes, an HBO comedy special, which made him a commercially successful comedian in the industry. He also won two Emmy Awards for the special.

Rock began receiving leading-man status in films in the 1990s and appeared in movies like “Boomerang”, “Beverly Hills Ninja”, “Lethal Weapon 4”, “Dogma”, etc. In most of the 2000s, Chris focused on working behind the cameras.
