History of Chartered Accountants Day
Chartered Accountants Day was established following the formation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on July 1st, 1949. ICAI was established by an act of parliament to promote and regulate the profession of chartered accountancy in the country.
ICAI – The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the largest professional accounting body in India. The institution is managed under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, and was established on 1 July 1949 as a statutory body under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949. The aim of this institution is to promote, develop and regulate the profession of Chartered Accountancy in the country.
The root of the establishment of ICAI can be traced back to 1930 when the Government of India decided to maintain a register called the Register of Accountants. People whose names were entered in the register were called Registered Accountants. At the time, it was also found that the profession of accountancy was highly unregulated and there was too much confusion about the auditors’ qualifications. One year after the country got its independence, an expert committee was set up in 1948 to look into the matter.
After the recommendation of the committee, a decision was made to create a separate autonomous association of accountants to regulate the profession. The recommendation was accepted by the Government of India and the Chartered Accountants Act was passed in 1949. the ICAI was established under section 3 of the Chartered Accountant Act.
