Significance of World Sports Journalists Day

History of World Sports Journalists Day

World Sports Journalist Day was established in 1994 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) to mark the 70th anniversary of its foundation. The AIPS was formed on July 2, 1924, during the Summer Olympics in Paris. Although sports journalism developed during the 1800s it was only in the 1900s that it began to take shape as a profession focusing more on sports than anything else. Before that, sports journalism emphasized only on elite sports and covered the social context of the events that happened during the sports. It was only in the 1920s that it started to recognize as a serious profession bringing news related to the sport and to promote the profession four years later the International Sports Press Association was formed.

The International Sports Press Association (AIPS)

The International Sports Press Association is a professional body that represents the international sports media and has more than 9,500 members worldwide. It was established as L’Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive (abbreviated as AIPS) by Frantz Reichel and Victor Boin. Reichel was a French sports administrator, athlete, cyclist, and journalist while Boin was a Belgian freestyle swimmer, water polo player, and épée fencer. The organization has its headquarter located in Lausanne, Switzerland.
