The income tax system was introduced in 1860 by the then Finance Minister of British India, Sir James Wilson. The main aim behind launching this tax was to compensate for the losses incurred by the government during the revolt of 1857. With time, the income tax structure showed changes with a new income tax passed in 1918 and again in 1922. Even after the country gained its independence in 1947, the income tax system was continued in India and the government of India took over the responsibility of administering the tax system. In 1961, an act was passed to clearly lay out the framework for the current income tax system in India, known as the Income Tax Act. In 2010, the government of India decided to observe Income Tax Day on 24 July to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the introduction income tax system in the country. Since then, the day has been observed annually by people all over India.
