Vince McMahon was born on August 24, 1945, in Pinehurst, North Carolina, to Victoria and Vincent James McMahon. His father was the founder of the American sports promotion company Capitol Wrestling Corporation, later renamed WWWF and known today as WWE. He left the family when Vince was a baby and took his older son with him. McMahon was raised in unstable and abusive surroundings by his mother and various stepfathers. One of his stepfathers, Leo Lupton, used to beat his mother and attack Vince when he tried to protect her. McMahon met his father at the age of 12 and became interested in professional wrestling.

McMahon met Linda Edwards in 1962 in a church when she was 13 and he was 16. Four years later, they got married at the young ages of 17 and 21 years. Vince McMahon’s Professional Career

McMahon made his debut as a ring announcer in 1969 for the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) TV program All-Star Wrestling. He worked as a wrestling promoter in 1971 and later became the play-by-play commentator for television matches. McMahon played a prominent role in expanding and promoting the business and soon became the face of WWWF. In 1979, he renamed the company as World Wrestling Federation (WWF). One year later, Vince founded the company Titan Sports which acquired control of the WWF from his ailing father.

After purchasing WWF, Vince began to expand it nationally by signing talent from other companies. Apart from WWE, McMahon opened and acquired many new businesses. However, none of them were as successful as WWE. In 1979, he purchased the team Cape Cod Buccaneers of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. At the same time, McMahon also purchased the Cape Cod Coliseum arena which hosted pro wrestling tournaments, hockey games, and rock concerts. But due to the lack of tourists, the business mostly suffered loss.

In 1990, Vince founded the World Bodybuilding Federation but it dissolved two years later in 1992. Again in 2000, he launched a professional American football league XFL that folded after one season due to poor ratings. The league made a comeback in 2018 but again filed for bankruptcy in 2020. Controversies & Allegations

McMahon was convicted in federal court in 1993 over a steroid controversy, accused of distributing steroids to his wrestlers. The main prosecution witness was WWF’s former wrestler Kevin Wacholz who testified that McMahon had ordered him to use steroids. However, when Kevin stated that he hated McMahon, his credibility was called into question and finally the jury dropped all the charges.

In 1992, McMahon was accused of sexual harassment by a former WWF referee Rita Chatterton and by a worker at a tanning bar in Miami. In 2022, the WWE board investigated a $3 million hush-money settlement made by McMahon over an alleged affair with a former employee. Other than this, the company also disclosed unrecorded payments of $19.6 million made by McMahon to settle sexual misconduct claims between 2006 and 2022. Following these incidents, Vince stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE and later announced his retirement. However, he returned to WWE as executive chairman in 2023 and will continue to do so for the merged company as well.
