Significance of Indian Navy Day
The main purpose behind observing the Indian Navy Day was to increase awareness about the Navy in the general public. But, after the infamous Indo-Pakistan war in 1971, the day began commemorating Operation Trident which took place on December 4, 1971. About Indian Navy

Found as East India Company’s Marine in 1612, the Indian Navy was later renamed in 1950.
History of the Indian Navy Day
The first Indian Navy Day was celebrated on 21 October 1944 as the Royal Indian Navy under British rule. After the success of the event, it was decided to celebrate the day every year in colder weather. Thus December 1st was chosen as the day of celebration and the second Navy Day was observed on 1 December 1945. The day was again changed to December 15 and was observed on this date till 1972. The week around December 15 was observed as Navy Week.
In 1972, at the Senior Naval Officers Conference, it was decided to observe Navy Day on December 4 and Navy Week would be observed from 1 to 7 December in commemoration of the success of Operation Trident. Operation Trident was the attack on the Karachi harbor during the Indo-Pakistan war. It was a successful naval action in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal during the war.

Observation of Indian Navy Day 2023
Navy Day celebrations in India begin on December 1 with events like performances by the Naval Symphonic Orchestra, open sea swimming competition, veteran sailors lunch, beating retreat, Navy Half Marathon, etc. Ships are opened for visitors, an Indian Navy Inter School Quiz Competition is organized, and an air display takes for school children. A military photo exhibition along with other events such as blood donation camps are held on this day. The Navy Ball and Navy Queen contests are organized as a part of the Navy Fest. Community service is also conducted by the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology on the occasion of Navy Day .
