Ali Wong was born on April 19, 1982, in San Francisco, California, to Tam Wong and Adolphus Wong. Her mother had relocated from Vietnam to the US and used to work as a social worker while her father was Chinese-American who worked as an anesthesiologist for Kaiser Permanente. Wong is the youngest of four siblings. She majored in Asian-American studies at ULCA and later went to Vietnam for higher studies through a Fulbright program.
Wong met Justin Hakuta in 2010 at the wedding of their mutual friends. Justin was a Fulbright Scholar just like Ali and studied at Harvard Business School at the time. The couple began dating, got married in 2014, and had two daughters together. However, they announced their divorce in 2022 after Wong expressed regret and discontentment with her marriage in one of her stand-up specials. Justin himself is an entrepreneur and the son of renowned inventor Ken Hakuta who also works as a tour manager for Ali. Even after the divorce, Justin and Ali are good friends. Ali started her career as a stand-up comedian after completing her graduation. To pursue her dreams, she moved to New York City and began performing her sketches in comedy clubs at night. After having a successful career as a stand-up comedian, Wong appeared on The Tonight Show in 2011 and also got cast as a regular in the comedy series “Are You There, Chelsea?”. She also appeared on “John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show” and “Dave Attell’s Comedy Underground Show” and the same year Variety named her one of the “10 Comics to Watch”. In 2012, Wong starred in the movie “Savages” opposite popular actors Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek.
