Check EPF Account Balance: Through Umang App, EPFO portal, SMS
The Government of India has introduced the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) which ensures the financial stability of an employee once he/she retires from service. This scheme is run and managed by Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).
Under the EPF scheme, an employee whose monthly salary is not more than ₹15,000 must deposit 12% of their salary towards the EPF scheme monthly. In this 12%, the employer must contribute 3.67% and after the employee retires, this total amount along with interest will be given to that employee through various methods.
Now comes the question, how can we check our EPF balance?
The EPFO has made it very easy for its members to check the outstanding balance of their active EPF account. This was made so that the members can avail short term or long-term emergency loans against their outstanding EPF balance.
In 2022, an employee who is under the EPF scheme can check their EPF account balance in four easy ways:
1. By downloading the Umang App on your mobile
The Umang app was launched by the Central Government with the sole purpose of serving the EPF members. An employee who is under the EPF scheme just needs to do a one-time registration after installing the app. Here, a member can check their EPF account balance, passbooks, claims, and many of such services enlisted under the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).

2. By visiting the official EPFO portal
For availing of this mode, the employee must have a valid Universal Account Number (UAN) properly verified by his/her employer.
To check one’s EPF balance through an online portal, a member must open: https://www.epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php
After opening this link to the official EPFO portal, go to the “for employees” section which can be found under the drop-down menu of “Our services”.
Then click on “Member’s Passbook” which will take you to a new webpage where you can check your outstanding EPF balance.
3. Through sending an SMS
This is by far the most flexible method to check your EPF account balance. To do this, you just need to send an SMS through your registered mobile number to 7738299899.
Inside the SMS, the formatting should be as follows:
EPFOHO UAN HIN —> UAN stands for the Universal Account Number of the employee, and the last three letters (here, HIN) stands for the language preference.
There are 10 languages accepted in the SMS for checking the EPF balance and they are:
- English,
- Bengali,
- Hindi,
- Marathi,
- Kannada,
- Tamil,
- Malayalam,
- Telegu,
- Gujrati,
- Punjabi.
4. By giving a missed call
This is also another more flexible method of checking your EPF balance. Under this, you just need to give a missed call at 011-22901406 through their registered number at UAN.
Within a few minutes, you will get your desired information via an SMS from the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).
