Christopher Nolan was born on 30 July 1970, in Westminster, London to Christina and Brendan. His father was an advertising executive who worked as a creative director while his mother was a flight attendant who later began teaching. Nolan’s brothers Matthew and Jonathan are also filmmakers. Inspired at a young age, Nolan began making short films with his action figures. He later joined the University College London (UCL) for its filmmaking facilities and was chosen as the president of the Union’s Film Society.
Nolan met Emma Thomas while they were both enrolled at the University College London and they began dating. They have been married since 1997 and Emma has since worked as a producer on all of his films. Together the couple has four children.

In 1993, Nolan started working as a camera operator, script reader, and director of corporate and industrial films. In 1996, he wrote, directed, and edited a short film titled “Larceny” which was featured at the Cambridge Film Festival. Nolan made his first feature film “Following” in 1998 which he wrote, directed, photographed, and edited. The movie was highly praised by the critics and won multiple awards at different festivals. With his first movie Nolan established himself as a reputed director in Hollywood.
