David Schwimmer was born on November 2, 1966, in Queens, New York City, to Jewish parents Arlene Coleman-Schwimmer and Arthur Schwimmer. Both his parents were successful attorneys. He also has an elder sister Ellie. Schwimmer had his first acting experience as the fairy godmother in a Cinderella play (Jewish version) at the age of 10. At the age of 13, he attended a Shakespeare workshop given by the famous English actor Sir Ian McKellen in Los Angeles.
In 2007, Schwimmer entered into a relationship with British artist Zoë Buckman. The couple got married in 2010 and their only daughter was born in 2011. Schwimmer attended Beverly Hills High School where he enrolled in a drama class and appeared in stage productions. He also attended a summer acting program at Northwestern University in Chicago after being encouraged by his school drama teacher.
