Denzel Washington was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York. His mother, Lennis (Wilson), was a beauty parlor owner and his father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., was an ordained Pentecostal minister and an employee of the New York City Water Department.
When he was 14 years old, his parents got divorced, and his mother sent him to Oakland Military Academy, a private preparatory school in New Windsor, New York. In 1977, he graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor’s degree in drama and journalism.
During the summer of 1976, Washington worked in a summer stock theater and became a part of various plays in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Washington made his acting debut in the 1977 made-for-television film Wilma, shortly after graduating from Fordham.
He got a big break in his career when he played Dr Phillip Chandler in the 1982–88 season of NBC’s hospital drama St. Elsewhere. He was one of only a few African-American actors who appeared on the show over the course of its six years.
