Gretchen Whitmer was born on 23 August 1971 in Lansing, Michigan to Sharon H. “Sherry” Reisig and Richard Whitmer. Both her parents were attorneys who got divorced when Gretchen was only ten years old.
Whitmer’s father was head of the state department of commerce and worked under Governor William Milliken.
He also served as the president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from 1988 to 2006. Her mother worked as an assistant attorney general under Michigan Attorney General, Frank J. Kelley. She has two younger siblings.
Whitmer’s first husband was Gary Shrewsbury with whom she got divorced. The couple had two children together. In 2011, she married dentist Marc P. Mallory, who also has three children from his previous marriage. Along with their two daughters and three sons, Whitmer and Mallory live in the Michigan Governor’s Mansion in Lansing, Michigan. The couple also own a vacation cottage in Antrim County near Elk Rapids.

Whitmer Early Political Career
Whitmer made her first unsuccessful attempt in politics when she ran for the Michigan House of Representatives in the 1990s. She tried again in 2000 and this time was elected to represent the 70th House district. Whitmer got reelected to the 69th House district in 2002 and 2004.
In March 2006, Whitmer replaced Virg Bernero (who got elected as the mayor of Michigan) after winning a special election to the Michigan State Senate. When the full term election took place in November 2010, Whitmer was reelected in the senate.
Her party colleagues unanimously chose her to be the Senate Democratic Leader in 2011. Gretchen Whitmer thus became the first woman to lead a party caucus in the Senate.
Gretchen Whitmer’s Journey to become Governor of Michigan
Whitmer announced in January 2017 that she would run in the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial race. She became the Democratic nominee for governor of Michigan in August 2018 and won all 83 counties in the state in the Democratic primary. Whitmer’s main opponent in the election was Republican Bill Schuette whom she defeated by a margin of nearly 10 point. Whitmer again defeated Republican nominee Tudor Dixon to get reelected for a second term as the Governor of Michigan.
Gretchen Whitmer kidnapping plot
In October 2020, six men were indicted and charged with the plotting to kidnap Whitmer and violently overthrow Michigan’s government. after communications among the far-right group were discovered, the FBI became aware of the scheme in early 2020 on the hints of a US army veteran.
Another seven men were charged with helping in the plot, including providing material support for firearm crimes, terrorist acts, and gang membership. The group used a private Facebook group to discuss the alleged plot. Six of these suspects were charged in federal court, while the other seven were charged with state crimes.
In April 2022, two men were acquitted on all charges on grounds of entrapment by federal authorities while two others were convicted of conspiracy to kidnap in August the same year. In October, three others were convicted of providing material support for a terrorist act. Whitmer thanked the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation in a livestream.
