Hanuman Jayanti 2024, Celebration of Lord Hanuman Birth Anniversary

Hanuman Jayanti 2024 will be celebrated on April 23, 2024. The purnima tithi starts from 3:25 AM on April 23 and end at 5:18 AM on April 24. It is an important festival of Hindus that celebrates the birth of Hindu God Hanuman.

The festival is celebrated all across the country with utmost devotion and fervor. Lord Hanuman is the God of wisdom and strength who is believed to be the remover of obstacles and protector of the innocents.

On the day of Hanuman Jayanti, thousands to devotees visit temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman and offer prayers to him. Sindur is believed to be favorite of Lord Hanuman and people offer sindur along with fruits and sweets to the lord on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

The Hanuman Jayanti festival is celebrated on different days in different parts of India. In most Indian states, the festival is observed on the full moon day of Hindu Chaitra month or in the month of Vaishakha. In certain southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated in the Tamil month of Dhanu.

Birth of Lord Hanuman

In the Hindu legends, there are many stories related to the birth and early life of Lord Hanuman. As per one story mentioned in Eknath’s Bhavartha Ramayana, Anjana was worshiping Rudra for a son when simultaneously King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was performing the ritual of Putrakama yagna for children.

Dasharatha received some sacred payasam to be shared by his three wives, leading to the births of his sons, Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna. Some fragment of the pudding got stuck on a kite and flew to the forest where Anjana was worshiping Rudra.

It is said that it was by the grace of Lord Vayu (God of air and wind) that the payasam reached Anjana who consumed it. Hanuman was born as a result of this and that’s why he is also considered as vayu-putra.

Hanuman and Ramayana

Lord Hanuman played a very significant role in the epic Ramayana and it was due to his efforts that Lord Rama was able to defeat Ravana after he kidnapped Sita. Hanuman was the one to find Sita by crossing the giant ocean and comforted her by telling her the well-being of Lord Rama.

Also, it was Hanuman who brought the Sanjeevni booti that spared the life of Lakshaman, Lord Rama’s younger brother, who was shot by the deadly weapon Ravana’s son Indrajit (Meghnad). With the help of Lord Hanuman and the rest vanara army, Lord Rama was finally able to attain victory of good over evil.

Hanuman Jayanti Puja Vidhi & Celebration

On the auspicious day of Hanuman Jayanti, devotees of Lord Hanuman worship him and seek his protection and blessings. Lord Hanuman is the provider of strength, wisdom and protection against evil, bad spirits and bad omens.

He is the greatest devotee of Lord Rama and nothing pleases him more than the worship of Lord Rama. On the day of Hanuman Jayanti, people worship Lord Hanuman, Lord Rama and also offers him sindur. Offering sindur is also believed to please Lord Hanuman and in fact, statues of Hanuman in temples can be seen completely covered with sindur.

There is a story behind this and is said that when Lord Hanuman found Devi Sita applying sindur to her forehead, he asked her the reasons behind it. She told Hanuman that she applies sindur for long life of Lord Rama. Hearing this, Hanuman smeared his entire body with sindur, thus ensuring Lord Rama’s immortality.

Many devotees also observe a fast on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti and conduct special pujas and pathas. The day is observed with great fervor in the temples dedicated to Hanuman where spiritual discourses are organized and prasads are distributed among the devotees.

Certain temples in Tamil Nadu and Kerala like Nanganallur, Namakkal, Suchindram, Thrikkaviyoor and Alathiyoor celebrate this day with great pomp and enthusiasm. People also recite various devotional hymns and prayers like the Hanuman Chalisa, Vishnu Sahasranama, Ram Nam mantra ashtjam and reading holy scriptures such as Shri Ramcharitmanas, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavad Purana, Srimad Vishnu Purana, etc on the day of Hanuman Jayanti.
