Rao Tula Ram & His Contributions to the Freedom Movement
Rao Tularam Singh was one of the leaders of the Indian rebellion of 1857 in Haryana. He was born in Rewari to Puran Singh and Gyan Kaur. After the first Indian Rebellion broke out May 1857, Rao along with his cousin and five hundred followers overthrew the local tehsildar and occupied Rewari. Eventually, Rao raised a force of about 5000 soldiers and began manufacturing the guns and other ammunition to help Emperor Bahadur Shah and other rebel forces in waging war against the British in Delhi.
In November 1857, Rao’s forces led by his cousin fought against the British in Narnaul where they were successfully able to kill and wound many British officers. However, the British forces retaliated and Rao moved to Rajasthan to join the force of Tantia Tope. After the forces of the Tantia Tope were defeated, Tula Ram left India to seek help from Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia. Rao Tula Ram died on 23 September 1863 in Afghanistan after an infection spread throughout his body.
