Special Days & Dates in September 2024

The month of September has a number of significant observances, some of international importance while others being observed in particular country (or countries) only. A list of important days in September has been provided below.

September 3:  Skyscraper Day

Every year 3rd September is celebrated as Skyscraper Day and commemorates the birth anniversary of Louis H. Sullivan, called the ‘father of skyscrapers’. By observing this day, people also honors the architects all around the world.

September 5: Teachers’ Day (India)

In India,  Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5th every year. On this very day, one of the greatest teacher and educationist, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born. In his honor, and to honor the teachers all around the country fro their hard work, Teacher’s Day is observed every year on 5 September.

September 8: International Literacy Day

To draw people’s attention towards the importance and impact of literacy on an individual and whole society, International Literacy Day is observed every year on 8 September. Different nations celebrate this day with new themes decided every year to observe this day.

September 10: World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is an annual observance held every year on 10 September. The idea is to provide awareness among people to take action to prevent suicides and is observed by many countries all around the world.

September 12: Mindfulness Day

Mindfulness Day was introduced in the year 2011 and it focuses on the importance of meditation on our day-to-day life. It is celebrated every year on September 12. Many meditation workshops are organized on this day to raise awareness about the benefit of mindfulness.

September 13: Day of the Programmer

Day of the Programmer or Programmer’s Day is observed on the 256th day of every year and falls on 13th of September every year (12th September in leap years).

September 14: Hindi Diwas

Every year, 14 September is celebrated as Hindi Day or Hindi Diwas in India. This day marks the anniversary of adoption of Hindi as one of the official languages by different Hindi speaking states of India in 1949.

September 15: Engineer’s Day (India)

Every year September 15 is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India and marks the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, an Indian civil engineer, statesman and the 19th Diwan of Mysore. He was the Chief Engineer of Krishna Raja Sagara dam and also one of the Chief Engineers of the flood protection system for Hyderabad.

September 16: International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

To bring people’s attention towards the importance of Ozone layer and work together to preserve the depleting ozone layer, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed every year on September 16.

September 21: International Day of Peace

International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed on 21 September every year. Many countries around the world observes this day and discourage the act of violence and war.

September 22: World Car-Free Day

World Car Free Day is celebrated every year on September 22 that encourages people to give up their cars for a day. The idea to celebrate this day is to save fuel and reduce pollution by giving up cars and picking some environment efficient way of transportation like bicycle or walking.

September 23: International Day of Sign Languages

Every year, 23rd September is observed as International Day of Sign Languages. The aim behind celebrating this day is to encourage people to learn and use of sign language so that deaf individual feel like a part of the society. The date of observance of International Day of Sign Languages is the same date on which the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.

September 24: World Rivers Day (Fourth Sunday of September)

To increase public awareness towards rivers and to encourage to keep the rivers clean and pollution free,  World Rivers Day is celebrated on fourth Sunday of September every year. In the year 2024, it will be observed on September 24.

September 27: World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day is observed every year on September 27th with the aim to make people aware of the importance of tourism and the role it plays in economic growth. Different countries celebrate this day in their own way deciding themes for celebrations.

September 28: World Rabies Day

The World Rabies Day is celebrated to make people aware of this disease and also commemorates the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, who developed an effective vaccine against it. It is observed every year on September 28.

September 28: World Maritime Day

To mark the contribution of international maritime industries in the world economy, World Maritime Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of September month. In the year 2024, the World Maritime Day observed on September 28.

September 30: International Translation Day

To recognize the role of professional translation and translators in connecting the nations worldwide, it was decided by the United Nations General Assembly that International Translation Day will be observed every year on September 30.
