Independence Day is observed every year on 15th of August. It is a national holiday in India and is one of three gazetted holidays along with Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti. All government offices, private offices, banks and schools remain close on this day.
There are a very few exceptions where certain private offices may remain open on this day as per their internal policy. But mostly, every institution observe this day by marking it as a day-off. The year 2023 will mark the seventy-seventh year of independence from the British rule.
History of India’s Independence
The British rule started in India in 1858 when the East India Company handed the powers to Queen Victoria after the mutiny of 1857. The revolt of 1857 marked the first ignition against the foreign rule over the Indian land. Fueled by this, many campaigns were carried out by the freedom fighters of the country to attain the freedom of the country.
Many movements were launched for gaining this freedom such as Non-Cooperation Movement by Mahatma Gandhi, Quit India Movement led by Congress, Indian National Army movement led by Subhas Chandra Bose and many more. As a combined result of the freedom fighters of the country, the Britishers were forced to announce the independence of India. However, before the independence, the country got divided into two nations, called as partition of India, and a new nation Pakistan was formed.

How to celebrate Independence Day?
The Independence Day of India is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the country and almost every offices, schools, banks, etc celebrates this fay with flag hoisting. After the flag hoisting, the national anthem Jana Gana Mana plays and marches are also carried out at many places. Institutions that remain closed on this day celebrates the Independence Day one day before.
Many cultural events based on patriotic themes are held at schools and colleges as a part of Independence Day celebration. Decoration with tricolor balloons and distribution of sweets on the occasion of Independence Day is also a famous practice. Kids are also encouraged to prepare drawing for the Independence Day following a specific theme. On the eve of Independence Day, the President of India delivers the “Address to the Nation” speech.
The Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag on Red Fort in Delhi followed with twenty-one gun shots fired in honor of those who lost their lives to attain and maintain freedom of the country.
