On 8 December 2005, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that the 4th April of every year will be seen as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

In addition to antipersonnel mines, all other explosive wartime remnants pose challenges. The Secretary-General reiterated his call for Protocol V on explosive remnants of war from the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons to be universalized and implemented on November 12, 2006.

The opening of the Convention on Cluster Munitions for signature by 108 states was welcomed by the Secretary-General in December 2008.

The work of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has been tailored to the explosive hazards that civilians, peacekeepers, and humanitarians face for more than two decades.

UNMAS’s primary goals are protecting civilians, supporting the voluntary return of the internally displaced and refugees, enabling humanitarian and recovery activities, and advocating for international humanitarian and human rights law. It also works to facilitate the deployment of UN missions and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
