Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl, the first International Day of the Girl Child was observed in 2012. The year 2024 marks the 12th anniversary celebration of IDG.

International Day of the Girl Child is a day of annual observance celebrated worldwide on October 11. The day was adopted by the United Nations and aims to raise awareness of gender inequality, child marriage, education deprivation and other sensitive issues faced by girls due to their gender.

History of International Day of the Girl Child

The first step towards empowerment of women was taken at the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. many countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was a blueprint to the principles concerning the equality of men and women.

Following the success of this declaration, a proposal to observe International Day of Girl Child was put forth in the 55th United Nations General Assembly. Rona Ambrose, the Minister for the Status of Women of Canada, sponsored the resolution and a group of women and girls created presentations to support the initiative on the Status of Women. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted the Resolution 66/170 and declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. The aim to establish the day was to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The first International Day of the Girl Child was observed on October 11 2012 and focused attention on the challenges girls face and promoted empowerment of girls and the fulfillment of their human rights.
