Significance of Celebrating International Tiger Day

Tiger is the largest of the cat species find mostly in the continents of Asia and Africa. There were once tigers found in abundance but their population has now shrunk to less than 5% of what they used to be originally. Due to illegal killing and habitat destruction, more than 95% tigers have gone extinct and the remaining 5% are endangered.

Tigers are an important part of the food chain and they help in maintaining the ecosystem. It is therefore necessary to think about their protection before they completely vanish from the face of the earth. To draw attention of people all over the world towards extinction and preservation of this creature, it was decided that July 29 will be observed as International Tiger Day. History of International Tiger Day

At Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, a resolution was adopted in 2010 with the aim to raise awareness about decline in number of tigers and to encourage activities towards their protection. The 13 tiger range countries came together and created Tx2 with the goal to double the number of tigers present, from 3200 to at least 6000.
