Ways to Celebrate Janaki Navami – Sita Navami Puja Vidhi and Fasting Rules
Devotees who are going to observe a fast on Janaki Navami should check the following points to understand the correct Puja Vidhi.
- On the day of Sita Navami, you should take a bath early in the morning. You may chant the following mantra while taking a bath.
“Ganga Cha Yamuna Chaiva Godavari Saraswati,
Narmada Sindhu Kaveri Jalesmin Sannidhim Kuru”
- You should start fasting at sunrise. You may take only drinking water throughout the day. If you are feeling that the fast is getting too difficult for you then you may have a simple meal consisting of milk, fruits, and nuts.
- You can go to a Sita Ram temple to pray. In case a temple is not available near you then you may pray at your home.
- Sandalwood, flowers, fruits, and dhoop should be used to worship Lord Rama and Sita.
- Devotees may also conduct a sita ram puja (Ramayana Patha) under a qualified Brahmin.
- You may also wear a twelve-mukhi rudraksha on this day. Wearing rudraksha purifies your inner soul and increases your willpower.
- Break your fast the next day by taking a sip of water and fruit.

Sita Navmi Vrat Katha
It is a story of ancient times. A Brahmin named Devdutt used to live with his wife Shobhna in a village. His wife was adulterous. One day, Brahmin was gone for alms. Getting a chance, the wife of Brahmin indulged in adultery by falling in bad company. Due to her act of adultery, a fire broke out in that village and she died.
Due to her sinful deeds, the wife of Brahmin was born in a Chandaal’s house. She was blind and suffering from leprosy. In this way, she was suffering due to her previous birth deeds.
One day she was suffering from hunger and thirst. Wandering around, she reached the Kaushalpuri village. That day was Shukla Navami, the holy day of Vaishakh month. She started pleading with people to give her some food.
While pleading, she reached the Shree Swarna Bhawan and said – “Give me something to eat”. Then a saint said – Goddess, today is the auspicious festival of Sita Navami, giving food on this day is a part of sin. That’s why you should come tomorrow morning and receive Thakur ji’s prasad.
After a lot of requests, he gave her basil and water. She died after eating there. But unknowingly she had observed the fast of Sita Navami. With the effect of that fast all her sins were destroyed. In her next birth, she became famous as Kamakala, the wife of the Maharaja of Kamrup. She built many temples and was engaged in the work of religion all her life.

Birth of Goddess Sita
According to the Hindu epic Ramayana, Sita was born to King Janaka and Queen Sunayana of Mithila. It is believed that while ploughing the field, King Janaka discovered a baby girl in a furrow and adopted her as his own daughter. This baby girl was none other than Sita.
As Sita grew up, she became known for her beauty and intelligence. She eventually married Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya. However, their happiness was short-lived as Lord Rama was exiled to the forest for 14 years. Sita accompanied him into the forest, where they faced many challenges and obstacles.

यह प्राचीन काल की कहानी है। एक गाँव में देवदत्त नाम का एक ब्राह्मण अपनी पत्नी शोभना के साथ रहता था। उसकी पत्नी व्यभिचारी थी। एक दिन ब्राह्मण भिक्षा के लिए गया हुआ था। मौका पाकर एक ब्राह्मण की पत्नी कुसंगति में पड़कर व्यभिचार में लिप्त हो गई। उसके व्यभिचार के कार्य के कारण उस गांव में आग लग गई और वह मर गई।
अपने पाप के कारण उस ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने एक चांडाल के घर जन्म लिया। वह अंधी थी और कुष्ठ रोग से पीड़ित थी। इस प्रकार वह अपने पूर्व जन्म के कर्मों का फल भोग रही थी।
एक दिन वह भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल थी। घूमते-घूमते वह कौशलपुरी गांव पहुंच गई। उस दिन वैशाख मास का पावन दिन शुक्ल नवमी था। वह लोगों से विनती करने लगी कि उसे कुछ खाना दे दो।
याचना करते-करते वह श्री स्वर्ण भवन के निकट पहुँची और बोली- “मुझे कुछ खाने को दो।” तब एक संत ने कहा – देवी, आज सीता नवमी का पावन पर्व है, इस दिन भोजन करना पाप है। इसलिए आप कल सुबह आकर ठाकुर जी का प्रसाद ग्रहण करें।
बहुत विनती करने पर उन्होंने उसे तुलसी और जल दिया। वहीं खाने के बाद उसकी मौत हो गई। लेकिन अनजाने में उसने सीता नवमी का व्रत रखा था। उस व्रत के प्रभाव से उसके सारे पाप नष्ट हो गए। अपने अगले जन्म में, वह कामरूप के महाराजा की पत्नी कामकला के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हुई। उसने कई मंदिर बनवाए और जीवन भर धर्म के काम में लगी रही।
इसी प्रकार जो मनुष्य सीता नवमी का विधि-विधान से व्रत और पूजन करते हैं उन्हें सभी प्रकार के सुख-सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति होती है।
