People should refrain from eating rice, pulses, grains, honey, leafy vegetables, certain spices, etc. Even those who do not observe a fast should avoid consuming these foods.Reciting Vishnu mantra and Jaya Ekadashi vrat katha are considered as important ritual related to this auspicious day. The devotees should also offer food to Brahmins or poor on the Dwadashi day (Parana day) and break their fast after that. Most people begin the ritual of Jaya Ekadashi fasting from one day before and intake a single meal on this day. Parana of the vrat is done on the next day, i.e., on Dwadashi as per the best time calculated for breaking fast.

The Jaya Ekadashi vrat katha goes as follows:Once upon a time, there was a place named Nandanvan where festivities were going on that was attended by several saints, deities, and demigods. Many Gandharva men were singing and Gandharva women were dancing. Among them, there was a dancer named Pushyavati who got focus of Gandharva named Malyavan and they both lost their attention. As a result, they were unable to perform their task with full concentration and were cursed by Lord Indra to be born in pisaach yoni. They both had to leave heaven and were forced to live their rest of lives in a forest near the Himalaya Mountains straying in the body of vampires.Days went by and they barely get any food to keep their body functioning. It was the day of Shukla Paksha Ekadashi during the Magh month and both Malyavan and Pushyavati had only a single food the whole day. The night was cold and they both were immensely hungry. They kept repenting their acts and kept praying to Lord Vishnu asking for forgiveness. As a result of chilly night and hunger they couldn’t survive the night and died. In this way, they both observed the fast of Jaya Ekadashi unknowingly and were sent to heaven.Everyone was startled to see them both back in heaven and asked them how did this happen. They told the whole story about how they unknowingly observed the fast on Jaya Ekadashi and by the grace of Lord Vishnu were able to get rid of pisaach yoni and returned back to heaven.
