Kamala Harris was born on 20 October 1964 in Oakland, California to Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris. Her mother is a biologist who arrived in the US from India in 1958 as a 19-year-old graduate student at the University of California. Harris’s father is a Stanford University professor emeritus of economics, arrived in the United States from British Jamaica in 1961 as graduate student at UC Berkeley. Her parents met through the civil rights movement.

Harris met Doug Emhoff, an entertainment lawyer, in 2013after being set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. They got married in 2014. Harris is a stepmother to Emhoff’s two children from his previous marriage.

Harris started working as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California in 1990 and earned reputation of an ‘able prosecutor on the way up’.

In 1998, she got recruited by San Francisco district attorney Terence Hallinan as an assistant district attorney. Kamala became the chief of the Career Criminal Division, where she prosecuted homicide, burglary, robbery, and sexual assault cases.

In 2000, Harris took a job at San Francisco City Hall, and began working for city attorney Louise Renne. There she ran the Family and Children’s Services Division, representing child abuse and neglect cases.

2020 presidential election

Kamala was a top contender and potential front-runner for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president. Harris officially announced in 2019 about her confirmed candidacy for president of the United States in the coming election.
