Kay Ivey was born on October 15, 1944, in Camden, Alabama to Boadman Nettles and Barbara Nettles Ivey. Her father was an officer in the US Army during World War II and had also worked with the Gees Bend community as part of the Farmers Home Administration. Ivey’s parents were second cousins and she was their only child.
Kay got married to Ben LaRavia with whom she met while studying at Auburn University. In 1967, the couple moved to California where Kay became a high school teacher for several years. After divorce, she returned to Alabama and started working with Merchants National Bank. Kay has been divorced snother time after Ben and has no children.

In 1979, the Governor of Alabama, Fob James, appointed Ivey to serve in the state cabinet. From 1980 to 1982, she served as the reading clerk of the Alabama House of Representatives. In 1982 Ivey also ran for State Auditor as a Democrat but lost the election. Ivey then worked as the Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office from 1982 to 1985.
