Significance of Kisan Diwas
National Farmer’s Day in India is celebrated as Kisan Diwas and it marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister of India and the leader of farmers, Chaudhary Charan Singh. Charan Singh enacted many laws and introduced several policies to empower farmers during his brief tenure as prime minister between 1979 and 1980.
The day identifies the hard and important work of the farmers all over the country and expresses gratitude to them for forming the backbone of the country’s economy.

History of Kisan Divas
Kisan Divas was established in 2001 by the Government of India to recognize the contribution of Chaudhary Charan Singh towards the welfare of farmers and the agriculture sector overall.
His birth anniversary, December 23, was chosen as the day of celebration. The first Kisan Diwas was observed on December 23, 2001 and has been celebrated every year since.

Chaudhary Charan Singh & his Contributions
Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902 in a rural family in India. He entered politics after being motivated by Mahatma Gandhi and took active part in the Indian Independence Movement. Singh later went on to become the 5th Prime Minister of India and served the country from July 1979 to January 1980. As the prime minister of the country, Singh made many major contributions towards the empowerment of farmers and agriculture sector.
Charan Singh launched many land reforms and transformed the face of agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. He introduced the Debt Redemption Bill 1939 to protect farmers from the abuse of money lenders. For this and his many other policies, he was referred to as the ‘champion of India’s peasants’. Singh died in 1987 and his memorial in New Delhi is known as Kishan Ghat.
