Each year on March 16, the National Vaccination Day, officially known as National Immunization Day, is commemorated to emphasize the significance of vaccination to the whole country. The day was originally commemorated in 1995, the year India launched its Pulse Polio Campaign. The National Immunization Day is particularly significant this year since the government began its largest Covid-19 vaccination campaign earlier last year and has successfully restricted the spread of this deadly virus.

National Vaccination Day History

In the late 1800s, modern vaccination was invented in India. Over 50 years ago, India developed and introduced its first Tuberculosis vaccine, Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Vaccines against Typhoid and diphtheria were added to the programme in 1978.

The Universal Immunization Program (UIP) was launched in 1985 as a retooled version of the original programme.

This special day focuses raising awareness about vaccination for a healthy life.

National Vaccination Day Significance

During this year’s National Vaccination Day, the Indian government wants to raise awareness about the need of vaccines against not just the deadly Poliovirus, but also against virtually every major viral disease against which people would not have natural resistance.

Tetanus, rubella, measles, mumps, rubella, TB, meningitis, hepatitis-B, diphtheria, pneumonia, and pertussis vaccines are among the most often administered in India to children under the age of five.

Tetanus vaccinations are also given to children under the age of five. Aside from these, vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, polio, poliovirus, and poliovirus are also available. The Covid-19 vaccine is the most recent addition, and it is designed for those who are especially vulnerable to the disease.
