NIOS Admission 2024: Application Form, Exam date, Eligibility
Admission will be given to the candidates in NIOS through online mode under various streams. Interested candidates can apply online directly or by approaching a nearby Study Centre/ Authorized NIOS Facilitation Centre/ Common Service Centre. There are four streams of online admission (stream 1, 2, 3 & 4) catering to the learners with different needs. Admissions are given into Secondary and Senior Secondary courses depending on the eligibility of the candidates. Details of NIOS 2024 admission process through the different ways are provided in this article below.
Streams for Admission
- Stream 1: This stream is open for all the learners who fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Secondary and the Senior Secondary courses.
- Stream 2: This stream for is open for such learners who had appeared but could not clear or who were eligible but could not appear in the Public Examination of the Secondary/ Senior Secondary level from any recognized board.
- Stream 3: This stream is open for such learners who have already passed the Secondary exam and wish to take part admission in any subject (up to 4 subjects) for updating their qualification. Learners who had appeared but could not clear, or who were eligible but could not appear in the public exam of the Secondary level from any recognized board and want to appear through On Demand Examination System of NIOS for the can also apply under this stream.
- Stream 4: This stream is open for such learners who have already passed the Senior Secondary exam and wish to take part admission in any subject (up to 4 subjects) for updating their qualification. Learners who had appeared but could not clear, or who were eligible but could not appear in the public exam of the Senior Secondary level from any recognized board and want to appear through On Demand Examination System of NIOS for the can also apply under this stream.
NIOS Admission 2024 Highlights
- The admissions in the four streams are mutually exclusive i.e., learner can opt for one of them only.
- The admission once registered is valid for a period of 5 years from the date of admission.
- Female learners of Ladakh are exempted from payment of Registration Fee and Cost of Course material. However, TOC fee, if applicable, will have to be paid.
- The NIOS offers the Secondary course in English, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Odia, Telugu, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam and Punjabi mediums; and the Senior Secondary course in English, Hindi, Odia, Bengali, Gujarati and Urdu mediums.
- A learner has the option to change one or more subjects, provided the total number of subjects does not exceed seven.
Eligibility Requirements
Below given are the eligibility criteria for NIOS admission 2024:
For secondary course:
Age Criteria: Candidates should be minimum 14 years old as on 31st January of Current year.
Educational Qualification:
- Those have passed class 8 and have valid age proof can register for the Secondary course.
- One is eligible for admission to the Secondary Course if he/she gives a self-certificate “I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course”.
- Who have studied at the secondary level but seeking admission to NIOS just to complete his/her course or improve his/her performance are also eligible.
For senior secondary course:
Age Criteria: A leaner should be minimum 15 years old as on 31st January of Current year.
Educational Qualification: Learners should have passed Secondary course from a recognized board.
* There is no upper age limit for admission.
NIOS 2024 Application Form
The online application form for admission to all streams in NIOS can be obtained from the official website www.nios.ac.in. The students must read all the important instructions before proceeding towards the application process. Step-by-step application filling process is given below:
- First, select the state/ UT that you belong to. Also, select the identity type and provide the identity document number and upload scanned copy of original identity supporting document.
- Next, select the course (Secondary or Senior Secondary) in which you wish to take admission.
- Now, the identity of the candidates will be verified after which they will be able to fill the application form.
- In the application form, the candidates will have to provide basic details such as name, father’s name, mother’s name, date of birth, gender, Aadhaar number, etc.
- Scanned copies of important documents in color should also be uploaded in to the application form, details of which are given later.
- Candidates will then have to generate an OTP to authenticate their email address and mobile number.
- After successful authentication, the candidates can fill up other details like address, category, medium of study, family income, qualification of father and mother, details of previous qualification (for Senior Secondary course), etc.
- Once all the details are entered into the form, it can be submitted along with the prescribed application fee.
- The fee can be deposited online through credit card/ debit card/ net banking. In case admission is done through Common Services Centers, fee can be paid via Electronic Wallet of CSCs.
Important Documents to be uploaded
The following documents should be uploaded in the application form in scanned format:
- Recent passport size color photograph
- Signature of learner (preferably in black ink)
- Valid Identity Proof (Aadhaar Number, Aadhaar Enrolment number, Passport number, Ration Card number, Bank Account number or any other valid government identity card etc.)
- Proof of Date of Birth in case of the Secondary Course (Birth Certificate/ Passport/ Transfer Certificate/ School Leaving Certificate/ Aadhaar Card with date of birth printed on it)
- Valid proof of Residence (Ration Card, Aadhaar Card, Appointment Letter from the Employer on Letter Head, Water/ Telephone/ Electricity Bill, Running Bank Account Statement, Income Tax Assessment Order, Election Commission’s Voter Id, Parents Passport in case of minor)
- Copy of proof of Permanent Address along with present Rent Agreement, if living in rented accommodation
- Class 8th mark sheet or Self Certificate (in case of secondary course)
- Class 10th mark sheet/ Certificate (in case of Senior Secondary Course)
- Self attested true copy of Caste Certificate (in case the learner belongs to SC/ ST/ OBC category)
- Ex-serviceman Certificate (in case candidate is an Ex-Serviceman)
- Disability Certificate (in case candidate is having any kind of disability)
- Original scan copy of failed mark sheet issued by the Parent Board of the School Education in case learner registers in NIOS for Stream 2, 3 or 4
NIOS Admission Process
Normal Admission
- The documents and other information provided by the candidates during registration process will be verified.
- After successful verification, an enrolment number of the candidates will be generated.
- Appropriate communication will be sent to the selected candidates through email and SMS after the admission is confirmed by the NIOS Management.
Re-admission of Ex-NIOS Learners
- Candidates who have completed five years of admission period in NIOS but were not able to complete the course are eligible for re-admission.
- The credit of the subjects passed (up to 4 subjects) during the previous admission will be transferred on submission of original mark sheet.
- However, these subjects must be passed not before the period of last 10 years.
Dual Enrolment and Part Admission
- Candidates studying in a regular school or have passed the Secondary/ Senior Secondary exam from a recognized board who wish to upgrade their knowledge and qualification can apply for part admission.
- Such candidates on passing the NIOS exam will only be given mark sheet and no other certificate.
Foreign Board Candidates
The candidates who have passed their HSC/ SSC exam from any foreign board who wish to take admission in the Senior Secondary course of NIOS will have to attach a certificate form from the concerned Embassy and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) to the effect that the exam passed by the candidate is equivalent to the HSC/ SSC exam of recognized Indian board.

Important Notes
- The candidates can download the Intimation-cum-Hall Ticket available on NIOS website: nios.ac.in.
- All the Practical Examinations will be held at their respective, Als where candidates enrolled during his/her admission unless otherwise (cancelled/non-functional AIs) notified by the concerned Regional Centre.
- Practical Examination will be conducted as per the above schedule. Since practical examination are being conducted in small batches, students /candidate are advised to contact the Centre Superintendent/Coordinator of AIs well in advance of the commencement of the practical exam to now specified dates as well as batch allotted to them.
- For Practical Examinations, the candidates at Als will be divided in required number of batches according to the capacity of the laboratory and consultation with the Examiner(s) concerned by the Superintendent/Coordinator of the Centre/Als.
- The result of examination is likely to be declared in 6 weeks alter the last date of the examination No enquiries about the actual ate of declaration of result will be entertained A copy o! the relevant portion of the result will be communicated to the Accredited Institutions immediately after declaration of results and will also be available on NIOS website nios.ac.in.
- The Mark-Sheet, Provisional Certificate and Migration-cum-Transfer Certificate will be issued to the successful candidates directly through the respective Als. In case of cancelled AIs, the documents will be sent to them by post at their residential addresses available at NIOS by the concerned Regional Centre. In the case of candidates whose required subjects are yet to be cleared will receive the mark-sheet only.
- There will be no change in the dates of the examination.
- The Practical examination will be conducted at their respective Accredited Institute (AIs) of NIOS. For details, please contact your Als/Regional Centre in advance.
- The Examination fees paid by the candidates entitle them to appear in practical and theory examination, it otherwise eligible, without having to pay anything extra at the examination centre.
